Home Celiac Sprue Incidence of Celiac Sprue

Celiac sprue is an inherited intolerance to gluten that causes intestinal disorders, anemia, osteoporosis, and other disorders. Over the past couple years, we have learned the prevalence of sprue in the US is much higher than previously believed: probably 1 in 120 to 150 people. About 6% of children with diabetes type I, autism, Asperger's, failure to thrive, Down's syndrome, or short stature have celiac sprue. In adults, the risk of sprue is higher with chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, anemia, infertility, osteopenia and osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriasis, urticaria, Sjogren's, autoimmune hepatitis. Those with biliary cirrhosis may have a very high incidence of celiac sprue (34% in one study).
